PARKS

Amboseli National Park is undoubtedly one of Kenya's most popular parks, and we can agree that the reason for its fame is Mount Kilimajaro, which stands out as a stunning backdrop, visible from every point in the park.
Covering an area of 392 square kilometres, Amboseli is a rather small park within an ecosystem of more than 8,000 square metres, bordering Tanzania, with which it "shares" Africa's highest peak, Kibo, which is often snow-capped and offers a unique view of the world.
Its name comes from a Masaai word meaning 'salt dust', and it became a National Park in the late1970s and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1991.
Subterranean rivers from nearby Kilimanjaro permanently feed the springs and lush papyrus-filled ponds, which are populated with wildlife in the dry season,
A safari in Amboseli is characterised by a spectacular alternation between arid and lush, ranging from the vast expanses of flat land, the drained Lake Amboseli basin and the permanent swamps of Olokenya and Enkongo Narok, where you can get up close to large herds of elephants with an extraordinarily relaxed and tranquil attitude.
Amboseli is home to one of the largest populations of elephants, which are carefully monitored and studied by the Amboseli Elephant Research Program. The birdlife is equally abundant and varied, especially in the vicinity of ponds and swamps, with over 400 species of birds recorded.
The park is home to over fifty different mammals including the small and rare elephant shrew, as well as zebras, giraffes, buffaloes and the magnificent felines such as lions and leopards.
From Nairobi: the main road is the Nairobi-Arusha via Namanga, or via Emali on the Nairobi-Mombasa.
From Mombasa: Access is usually through Tsavo West National Park via Kimana ( Olkelunyiet ) Gate.
Entrance to the park: 800 Kshs for adult residents ( 200 Kshs for children ), 35 USD for adult non-residents ( 20USD for children ).
