Tsavo National Park has been listed by the prestigious US newspaper New York Times as one of the world's 50 best travel destinations to visit in 2024.
In the list published by the New York Times, the Kenyan national park was chosen on the following grounds: 'Its exceptional wildlife and the large number of elephants that can be seen. Of the more than 36,000 elephants in Kenya, half are found in Tsavo, which makes the park attract thousands of visitors a year'.
Within the 22,000 square metres of the park, which unites Tsavo East and West and is one of the largest nature reserves in the world, there is also an attraction that not only contributes to the preservation of the elephants, but also to increasing their numbers and promoting tourism for many enthusiasts. This is the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the organisation that, as the New York Times itself notes, 'has rehabilitated and freed 200 elephant orphans and runs anti-poaching teams, builds water sources and secures vulnerable borders'. The orphanage is a favourite destination for tourism not only in the US, with often long waiting lists for visits, conditioned by the long-distance adoption of an orphaned baby elephant.
In Africa, Kenya and the Tsavo were mentioned among the destinations to be discovered this year, along with Egypt, for the tourist resort of Hurgada with its marine and desert attractions, Morocco for the breathtaking Ourika Valley, one of the most sought-after excursions in the Atlas Mountains, and Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar for its vibrant art and cultural scene, expressed under the aegis of Fondation H.
In the US, Kenya has recently come back into fashion: it was even ranked by the Telegraph Travel Awards as the seventh favourite holiday destination for American tourists.
The government hopes that the policy of eliminating tourist visas will add impetus to the economy and attract more tourists, thanks to the wonders of its natural environment, which includes not only the savannah, but also coral beaches for sea lovers, pristine mountain paradises for hikers, and areas of ethnic and cultural interest.
