Ilaria's love for Kenya build a nursery in Jimba

The story of Victoria Academy School near Watamu

27-07-2017 di redazione

Last March I went to Kenya for the 7thtime in my life, but it was the first time for my Daughter Victoria, who is now almost 2 years old.
Peter and Lilly are a just married couple with whom I established a very nice friendship which became stronger and stronger despite the distance. They were born and grown up in a small Village near the coast.
As soon as they became a family, they started creating something for the needy children of their village.
Since we are talking of about many families with very poor backgrounds, parents are not able to grant basic education regarding hygiene and safety, like wearing shoes to avoid insects’ infections, washing fruits and vegetables coming from the ground before eating them, to avoid critical illnesses; and they would not go to the Primary School, which is free of charge, until they are 8 years old, with a lot of risks for their health and safety. The scope is really to keep them alive.
Since Peter & Lilly are not in a position to bear school fees of any private existing Kindergarten, for all kids, they decided to pay a rent for a basic building and a salary for 3 teachers from their own salary, offering behavioural and school education, to all the poorest kids of the village.
Last year, in May 2016, they reached an import goal: many kids could finally go to Kindergarten.
During my last trip to Kenya, they brought me to Jimba.
The school is really small.
The idea is to buy a piece of land and build a new bigger school, avoiding a rent.
At this point, I decided to cooperate providing any kind of help I can.
Our daughter Victoria is showing curiosity and desire to learn, socialize and interact, on a daily basis.
We would like to satisfy the same desires, which the kids in Jimba have.
That’s the reason why we dedicated this project to her, and we called the School Victoria Academy, Jimba, Kenya
Current costs related to the temporary school are:

  • about 46 € per month, for the rent

  • about 64 € per month, for each one of the 3 teachers

Therefore, a total of 238 € per month
The first  objective of the project was to buy a¼ of acreland in Jimba (about 1000 square meters) to build a new bigger school hosting more kids then now and creating different classes based on ages.
The school will be then registered and officially recognized.
The price of the land was about2300 € and on April 4thwe reached the target and we bought the land!
Then, we received the quotation for the building…
The whole project regards:

  • 4 classes

  • Toilets

  • Office

Each class costs almost 1000 €, while the Toilets about 700 € and the office about 500 €.
Until now we built two classes, the toilets and one office.
Now, before proceeding with the Building ofthe lasts 2 classes, we want to finalise one Class, the Toilets and the Office, with roofs, floor, windows and doors, so to move from the temporary school to our building, avoiding any further rental costs.
Roofing is about 1072 €, while Floors 466 €, Windows 257 € and Doors € 165.
Once the building will be finished, we will try to reach the second  objective of the project.
Victoria Academy will grant education for 60 kids, from 1 to 7 years old, divided in 4 rooms, with 4 teachers, from Monday 8 am to Friday 4 pm.
We will take care of paying the services, it means:

  • teachers’ salaries

  • school material

  • building maintenance

for a total of € 5’040/year (that is € 420/month)
It means that with 7 € per month, for each kid, we will exactly cover the monthly expenses.
At the end, 60 kids will be free to go to Kindergarten, (until the beginning of the Primary School, a 6 years), and this will be completely free for their families.
All together we can do great things!
Thank you again for your interest and for your time!
